What this is

Demand response saves energy at a grid location instead of firing up another generator, and pays the homes and businesses that shift when they use power. Electricity is usually tightest on hot summer afternoons, when air conditioning across thousands of homes peaks at the same time. The grid has to meet that peak with whatever is available, and the last bit of it is the most expensive and usually the dirtiest. If enough homes with batteries discharge during those few hours, the peak gets smaller — and everyone's bills feel it, not just the households taking part.

Batteries are very good at this. They charge through the day from abundant solar and hold that energy until the sun goes down and the price is high. And the response is instant.

Why Tarneit and Truganina

They are among the fastest-growing suburbs in Melbourne, with high rooftop solar and battery uptake and a network that has grown quickly to keep up. Lots of new homes, and lots of stored energy already sitting in garages — exactly where flexible load is worth putting to use. The batteries are here and ready to help.

What we'd ask of you

Three things, and none of them involve changing your energy plan.

  1. Connect your battery to Daydream through its app or cloud account. No hardware, no site visit.
  2. We watch prices and grid conditions and tell your battery when the network is tight or wholesale prices spike. Ideally that dispatches straight to your battery, and you'll get an email or SMS either way.
  3. Around 6 times across summer, your battery discharges during those windows — doing what it was built for, at the moment it's worth the most. You set a reserve level we never go below, and you can opt out of any event.

That's the whole pilot. We're proving something simple: that ordinary households with batteries can help hold up the grid, and get paid for it.

Registering does not guarantee a place. We have 30 spots, the registration deadline is 31 August 2026, and we'll confirm participant selection in September 2026. The pilot is intended to run from October 2026 until March 2027. Pilot payment is capped at $200 per household and may be adjusted based on participation. We're an early-stage Melbourne company — this trial is how we prove the idea works, and we'll share what we learn with everyone who takes part.

1. Your battery and inverter

The inverter is the part we actually talk to, so it matters even if you're not sure.

2. Your electricity retailer

You keep whoever you're with — we're not asking you to switch.

3. Are you already in a VPP?

If you are, we still want to hear from you — it just changes your personalised event workflow.

If you're not in a VPP, why not?

Was your battery installed under a Solar Victoria rebate or interest-free loan?

Does your electricity contract restrict letting a third party control your battery?

Are you on a flexible export or export-limit arrangement with your distributor?

None of these rules you out. If your battery is already in a VPP, or was installed under a rebate with conditions attached, we'll check those terms with you before offering you a place.

You set a reserve level and we never go below it.

How we handle your information

Who is collecting this: Daydream Energy Pty Ltd (ACN 700 900 483).

What we collect: the answers you give in this form, plus your IP address, browser user agent, the page that referred you, and any code printed on the flyer you scanned. We use the flyer code to tell which letterbox drop reached you. If you don't give us these details we can't consider you for the pilot.

Why we collect it: to work out whether your home is eligible for the Sundown pilot, to choose the participating households, to decide which battery and inverter systems we need to support, and to decide if there is enough interest to run the pilot program. We will not use your details for any other purpose without asking you first, and we will never sell them.

Where it is stored: our systems are hosted by Amazon Web Services, so your information is stored and processed on infrastructure they operate.

Who we may share it with: if you are selected for the pilot and separately agree at that point, we may anonymise your household data to share pilot performance with your electricity distributor. Nobody else. The data we present is anonymised to show energy trends rather than any specific household or personal information.

How long we keep it: if you are not selected, we will delete your details within 6 months of the pilot's participants being confirmed.

Giving us this information is voluntary. You can decline, and you can leave any optional question blank.
